Chris Melancon, Founder & CEO
Since 1993, Chris has served in leadership roles for emerging businesses focused on life sciences and information technology. Chris leveraged his engineering degree and MBA initially at Citigroup and through the inception and subsequent acquisition of a business-to-business e-commerce company in 2000. Prior to founding Spyglass Biosecurity in 2007, Chris led a line of business at Applied Biosystems, a division of Life Technologies, where he promoted a comprehensive program for delivering Early Warning Systems for biological surveillance. Chris holds degrees in mechanical engineering, applied physics and business.
Paul Janecek, Ph.D., Chief Information Architect
Paul joined Spyglass in early 2011 after completing a 6-year professorship at the Asian Institute of Technology. He holds degrees in computer science and electrical engineering, and his expertise in data visualization and human-computer interaction is the driving force behind Spyglass’s water information network strategy. Prior to beginning a career in academic research in 1995, Paul worked for Intel Corporation and flew helicopters for the Army. Paul Janecek and Chris Melancon began working together over 20 years ago as roommates at West Point.

Caleb Page, Chief Operating Officer
Caleb Page served as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard for 11 years. He has domestic and overseas experience in electronics manufacturing and holds a graduate degree in Industrial Engineering. Before joining Spyglass, Caleb founded several successful small businesses and has led multi-million dollar programs in the aerospace, defense and semiconductor industries.
Shana Carmichael, Laboratory Manager
Shana has managed the Spyglass reagent production laboratory since July 2009. She has successfully started and maintained lab operations for a water quality lab at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) and served in various scientific roles at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and the USDA Central Coast Watershed Studies program (CCoWS). Shana completed a Bachelors of Science degree in Earth System Science and Policy: Marine and Coastal Ecology and Minor in Mathematics at California State University Monterey Bay under the NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship program.
Karen Beachler, Customer Communications Manager
Karen created the first Spyglass ESP System user manual in 2010. She has led technical communications projects in the medical device, semiconductor and software industries since 1988. Karen is now focused on creating effective technical resources to help our customers be successful with Spyglass products.
Michael J. Casteel, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., Water Quality Program Manager
Mike's expertise involves the recovery, detection and control of micro-organisms in water. His academic degrees include a B.S. in environmental health and chemistry, a M.S. in public health, and a Ph.D. in environmental health microbiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before joining Spyglass, he was employed as a research microbiologist with a large water utility in Northern California, where his main task was to design and equip BSL-2 laboratories and to implement methods for the molecular detection of waterborne pathogens and other microbes.
