I live in San Diego as one member of the virtual Spyglass team and I have been volunteering with San Diego Coastkeeper over the last few months. It is a non-profit organization formed to protect and restore the waters around San Diego. There are many programs spanning from advocacy to clean up to outreach and internships. The area in which I’ve participated is water quality monitoring.

Spyglass participated in the February Beach Water Quality Workgroup (BWQW) meeting held in Alameda, CA. Initially formed by the State Water Resource Control Board (SWRCB) in 1998, the BWQW facilitates coordination of beach water quality related monitoring, pollution abatement, public education, and public notification efforts. The BWQW holds quarterly meetings in both Northern and Southern California locations.

On January 31st, the EPA announced that it would make almost $10 million in grants available to eligible beach and shoreline states, territories, and tribes. These grants, part of the 2000 BEACH Act, are awarded to help improve water quality testing programs and to help beach managers better inform the public when water quality problems occur.

Yesterday several Spyglass employees participated in a webinar hosted by the EPA. The focus of this webinar was the draft version of the 2012 Recreational Water Quality Criteria (RWQC). This webinar is part of the EPA’s process of developing and assessing new criteria for testing water at recreational beaches and shorelines.
